OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP Cheltenham, 2nd-10th July Two members of Bowdon, David Walters & David Maugham, are playing in the Open Championship held at Cheltenham. The singles event is a best-of-five game knock-out played by those who emerge from the initial 3 days of block play having won more tha half of their games. The doubles event is played as a straight knock-out on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday, usually reaching the quarter-final stage. The remaining matches are fitted in after singles play through the rest of the week, with the final usually taking place in the late afternoon of 10th July, if one or more of the finalists is needed for the singles final, otherwise Sunday morning. In addition to the singles and doubles Championships, those eliminated before the semi-final contest the prestigious Association Plate. There are also several other "consolation" events keeping everyone busy. The singles event is played using the Super-Advanced rules, where a lift is conceded for running hoops 4, 1-back or 4-back and a contact if two lift hoops are run ahead of partner ball.
