CHARITY ROQUET COMPETITION

Which one is yours, Alan?
Alan Mayne beat Sylvia Steer in a play-off

Over the weekend the charity roquet competition was tied between Alan Mayne and Sylvia Steer with 13 roquets from 24 attempts at different distances; this has now been resolved and the overall winner is Alan Mayne - he beat Sylvia 6-5 in a play-off.

A Charity Roquet competition, in aid of the Royal British Legion poppy appeal, took place on Wednesday 5th November 2014, immediately after the conclusion of the one ball competition on that day.

Members were encouraged to enter by making a donation to the appeal and attempting to roquet another ball over varying distances (7, 14 & 21 yards); on the day 33 people took part.

- it's interesting to see how we contort ourselves when willing the ball on to hit the target!

Club members had a further opportunity to increase their score on Saturday but no-one else competed for the trophy, although some did make additional contributions to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2014.

In all, the club members raised a total of £250 for this worthy charity. A big thank you to all those that contributed.

The trophy consists of one of the ceramic poppies currently on display at the Tower of London, suitably boxed and mounted to prevent damage.  The trophy will not be available for presentation to the first winner until about the end of February 2015 and is presented to Bowdon Croquet Club on the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1. A tribute to the fallen, honouring not only those of the British Commonwealth, their comrades-in-arms from Belgium, France and many other allied nations, who willingly made the supreme sacrifice in that and other conflicts since then.
