Bowdon
win the Festival of Croquet at Southport
BOWDON ARE THE 2014 NW
FESTIVAL OF CROQUET CHAMPIONS. The
team from Bowdon won the 20th NW Festival of
Croquet held at Southport & Birkdale Croquet
Club over the weekend. The Advance
and Golf teams also won their individual
competitions.
The Saturday started damp
and drizzly, and was raining on and off for much
of the morning. Still it was a lot better than
when I got there on Friday afternoon as
it had been raining for a few
hours and I was fearing the lawns might
flood if it continued. Saturday afternoon it
dried out, but was quite chilly (especially for
the end of June). Advanced team was Colin Irwin
and Brian Storey - both days Handicap team, Christine Irwin,
Steve Reynolds, and Chris Evans (Saturday),
Louise Cheyne (Sunday) Short team, Carol Steinberg,
Patrick Cheyne, and Louise Cheyne (Saturday),
Carol Sinclair (Sunday) Golf team, Graham Good, Brian
Rust, and Margaret Moss (Saturday), Chris
Evans (Sunday). At the end of the day we had
done well, with the Advanced team
winning all 3 of their games, the Handicap
team had won 2 and lost 2, the Short team had
won 2 and drawn 1 (a complicated story as to how
you manage a draw out of 3 games), and the
Golf team had won 3 and lost 1. Sunday was a bright sunny day,
with the temperature a good few degrees higher.
Croquet is much more pleasant with the sun
shining. Final scores were: Advanced
team Won 5 out of 5 matches, finishing top of 6. Handicap
team Won 4, Lost 3, finishing 4th of 8. Short team
Won 2, Lost 2, Drew 1, finishing 3rd of 6. Golf team Won
6, Lost 1, finishing top of 8. In the Overall scoring: Winners
Bowdon with 22 points 2nd
Southport with 16 3rd Chester
with 13. So a very successful weekend
for Bowdon. The organisation was very good, as
was the food. An excellent weekend. Hopefully more people will be
interested in attending next year. Book it in
your diaries now. Steve Reynolds Click
