LETTER FROM SOUTH AFRICA

Liz and Rupert Webb have been holidaying in South Africa. Whilst there, they played in a croquet tournament in Somerset West. Here is a letter from Liz on how they got on:

"They told us not to take water-proofs as it never rains in February in South Africa.  On the third day of the tournament in Somerset West, the heavens opened and we were drenched, but as in England we battled on, even without water-proofs.  Fortunately this was an isolated case, the rest of the week was unbelievably scorching hot - but no one complained.  Unlike Bowdon the lawns were very heavy, unlike Bowdon the hoops were very generous and unlike Bowdon the hoops had to be brought in every night.  How lucky we are at Bowdon.

There were 23 players in the tournament and 15 were from England. Handicaps ranging from 12, Rupert, to -2, Mark Avery.  Perhaps the weather enticed us all.  Liz won a silver cup by coming first in her class event while Rupert came bottom.  This was a complete reversal of our last tournament abroad, Corfu last October, when Rupert won the trophy and liz came bottom.  Throw in a few vineyards, great company in the digs and lovely places to visit, and a great time was had by all".

Obviously, Keith Aiton's talk on the mind game had a great impact on Liz!
