SOLOMON GRUNDY COMPETITION

A list is now on the notice board in the clubhouse where members can sign up for the next session of this event. John Saxby is willing to take phone calls/emails from anyone who is unable to get down to the club and personally do this.

A new competition is to be run from the start of the coming season, every Monday, called the Solomon Grundy Competition. It is open to all members of the club who have a handicap of 20 or better and all games will be recorded on handicap cards in the normal manner for handicap play. These will be 18-point full bisque games using the 4th form of play, under the heading of Shortened Games, Law 44(b)(4), i.e. “the game is started with all the clips on hoop 1 but as soon as one of the balls of a side scores hoop 1 for itself or by being peeled through hoop 1, 3-back becomes the next hoop for its partner ball and the appropriate clip is placed on 3-back immediately. If both the striker's ball and the partner ball complete the running of hoop 1 in the same stroke, it is deemed that hoop 1 was only scored by the striker's ball. This variation is for singles play only”. There will be a 90 minute time limit and 2 games will be played from 1030 until 1330.

A maximum of 3 lawns will be available for the competition, which means that only 12 people per week will be allowed to play. A form of pre-registration will be introduced so that anyone playing in week 1 cannot sign-up for the next competition until the Wednesday of that week, allowing anyone not able to play that week to sign up for week 2; up to 12 new players will then play in week 2. There will be a 30p entry fee, all of which goes into the bar fund to cover tea and coffee. John Saxby will organise and manage this competition.
