Bury 1 Bowdon Earls 2 (NWF Midweek League)
MATCH ABANDONED DUE TO FLOODED LAWNS

John Lucas (Capt.)

Mike Steer

Helen Hudson

Chris Evans
The Earls Midweek Swimming Croquet team had a very nice lunch at Bury, which featured a particularly tasty cheesecake. Before that Mike Steer beat Tony Phillips and Chris Evans [24] played a very close match against Graham Saunders [9] losing by just -2T. These 2 matches were played on a very wet lawn.

Meanwhile those brave stalwarts, Helen Hudson [18] and John Lucas fought a dogged battle, using snorkelling equipment and lots of guile, against Geoff Young [18] and Margaret Anderton [14]. That lawn was just about playable at the start but worsened considerably as the rain continued, and by the finish Helen and John won by +4T on a lawn that was quite unfit. A favourite tactic of John’s in the latter stages was to separate their opponents by perhaps only 6 yards, but with a lake between them.

The Bury team, plus Barbara Young, worked very hard indeed clearing water from both lawns for well over an hour before we arrived to allow morning play. The unremitting rain rendered both lawns unplayable after lunch, and no further play took place. Mike and John consoled themselves with second helpings of cheesecake. Bury showed a willingness to concede, but it may be that 'no result' is entered in league records.
