THE
WINTER LAWNS ARE NOW OPEN The summer season ended on Sunday, 23rd October, when lawns 1 & 2 were taken out of commission. Lawns 3 & 4 are now available for winter use after the initial work of cutting the turf was carried out by the contractors. Work will be carried out on the lawns over
the winter months:
- lawns 1 & 2 have been taken out of use completely until the end of March 2012 while they are cored, top dressed and over-seeded. - lawn 4 has been moved away from the fence next to the Bowdon Assembly Rooms by about 6 feet and the turf has been removed and stored on the viewing area. Contractors did this work, along with the removal of turf from the area at the top of the bank on lawn 3 (next to the practise lawn) in readiness to replace the turf by the fence at a later date because of the moss that has grown up on lawn 4. At least one of lawns 3 & 4 will be open each day during the winter (if not both) and these have now been divided into 4 short lawns. - work started on Tuesday by our groundsmen, John & Alan, on a new drainage system to try to alleviate the annual problem we have from rain pouring off the roof of the adjoining property and on to lawn 4; this is expected to take a week to do and, upon completion, the turf will be replaced in the two bare areas. A ditch has been dug to take the drains: ![]() A week later, the land drain was installed in the trench, together with 2 tons of gravel, and all the turf replaced and top dressed; many thanks go to Colin Irwin, David Holland and Barry Keen for all their hard work: The only organised play will be on a Wednesday (nothing on Sundays this year) when a weekly competition of one-ball or short croquet will be run, depending on numbers attending. Players will meet at 10.30am for an 11am start, and play will end at approx. 2.30pm, so please bring along your own lunch if you wish to play. |
