BREAKING NEWS ARCHIVE 20/05/03 - SYLVIA STEER WINS AT BUDLEIGH SALTERTON
Budleigh Salterton May
Tournament
Sylvia Steer won the 'C' Class Event at Budleigh Salterton's
May Tournament held between May 12th and 17th. Here are some more details
of that win.
After a good first day in which Sylvia won 3 games (+18, +24, +23), she
went on to win 5 out of the seven games in her group. There were 4
people on 5 wins but as each had beaten at least one of the others, the finalists
were chosen from the two players with the highest positive score. That
first day certainly helped! The other finalist was Amanda Prowse from
Sidmouth, also a 9 handicap. Sylvia beat Amanda +12 to win the J.
K. Brown Memorial Challenge Cup. (Won by Martin Granger Brown in 1968
and 1970).
Sylvia and Mike played in the doubles and although knocked out of the
'X' doubles in the first round, went on to win the 'Y' doubles (for those
knocked out of the 'X'), beating four couples along the way. This
resulted in them being presented with a nice bottle of wine each and made
it almost worth not winning the 'X'.
