ANDY
KENYON WINS 44th NOVICES' TOURNAMENT, Saturday 17th
September
One
of the nicest trophies that
is played for at Bowdon is the Fotiadi Novices' Silver
Challenge Bowl.
On Saturday, six of our novices competed for this trophy in
an
all-play-all competition of short croquet, each playing 5
games in
total, lasting 1 hour.
Andy Kenyon was the outright
winner, winning all of his games - not only that but he
managed to peg out in 3 of them (pegging out one ball in
the other two). Only one other player
managed to finish a game with a peg out and that was Sue
Lucas and she
had 2 wins; Neil Thompson was the runner-up with 4 wins.
The weather was fairly kind to the players, starting off
bright but
clouding up later. There were only a few short showers but
this did not
deter them. The hardest problem for them was the pace of the
lawns,
often resulting in hoop approaches being overrun. Their hoop
running
and roquet shots were of a high standard overall and they
soon realised
it was better to go second if they won the toss.
Martin Granger Brown presented the prizes and gave a word of
advice for
the players that would help to improve their play in future:
instead of
positioning their ball in front of the hoop ready to run it,
they
should go to the furtherest ball and tidy up the break
before returning
to make the hoop for the same bisque that they were prepared
to invest.
Martin also informed Andy that his handicap would be 22 from
now on!
A good day as had by all and special thanks were given to
Lorna Frost
for all her organisation and running of the tournament.
