Tournaments
David Maugham won the Bowdon June Weekend trophy for the tenth time.
Richard Smith was runner-up in the Bath Adanced tournament.
Ian Lines won the Pendle Advanced and Brian Storey won the Cumbria Cup
at Crake.
There were two more tournament wins for David Maugham, the Men's and
the Easterns.
Wednesday Competition
Mike Steer, Steve Lewis, Ros Pimlott and Keith James all won a
Wednesday Comp. each.
Team Matches
St. Mary's lost two home matches to Crake (5-2) and Southport (4-3) in
the NW Handicap league but managed to beat Bury away 5-2.
Also in the NW Handicap League Firs managed a good 5-2 win at Bury.
In the Advanced League Saints had a close encounter with Crake Valley,
winning 5-4.
The Short team lost 11-5 at Southport and the Griffins beat
Southport 4-3.
Other Highlights
Martin Granger Brown had the honour of meeting Prince Charles to be
presented with his MBE.
Bowdon won the Southport Jamboree Trophy, open to all NW Federation
teams.
Ailsa Lines and David Maugham (England), Keith Aiton (Scotland) and
David Walters (Wales) all played for their country in the Home
Internationals. David had a 4/4 record but could not stop England from
winning the tournament.
Colin Irwin got out his cooking utensils to provide another
superb barbecue.

Francois Garcia won the Bath Handicap tournament.
John Lucas won the Heaton Park handicap.
Richard Smith won the Advanced competition at Southport.
Ken Cooper won the Open Singles, Handicap Doubles (with Jenny Dennis)
and the Advanced Singles at the Northerns (with
Alan Mayne). Other Northerns winners were Mike Steer ('B' Class),
Francois
Garcia ('C' Class) and Alan Linton (Hamdicap).
 
 
Wednesday Competition
Two wins for Lorna Frost and one for David Holland.

There were three good away wins in the knockout tournamnrts, the
Longman Cup 4-3 at Pendle, the Mary Rose team won 5-1 at Bristol and
the Inter-Club match 5-2 at Edgbaston.
Other Highlights
Bowdon lost to the NZ Youth team (well two of
them) 5-3.
The Culcheth club came across for a friendly Golf
match .
Pupils from Altrincham Grammar School spent a day at the club.
Scotland won the 'Alternative Counties'.

David Walters was invited to take part in
croquet on a cruise liner.
After 20 years trying for a triple peel John Wastell completed one in
the Saints match against Fylde and followed it with another
3 days later!

AUGUST

Tournaments
Ian Lines won the North of England Championships played at Bowdon and
also won the Cavendish Clock at Crake Valley.
Barry Keen won the Pendle Handicap Tournament.
Wednesday Competition
Ken Cooper won Wild Wednesday.
The other Wednesday tournaments in August were won by David Holland,
Ken Cooper and Steve Lewis.
Team Matches
In the Advanced League there was a win (5-4) at Southport and a defeat
(3-6 at Fylde) for Canons whilst the Saints went down 7-2 at Crake.
There were two 4-3 defeats (to Pendle at home and Bury Peelers away)
for St. Mary's in the Handicap league whilst Firs won 4-3 at Bury
Caesars)
and won 6-1 at home to Chester. The Short team lost 9-7 at Pendle and
Griffins had a brilliant 7-0 win over Pendle.

SEPTEMBER
ONWARDS

Tournaments
Janice Moir and Paul Widger did well enough in the regional finals of
the All England handicap to get through to the national finals.
Four club members took part in the Eights tournaments but, unusually
for Bowdon, none of them was successful.
Newcomer Derek Watson won the Novices one-day tournament.
Mike Sandler won the Bowdon 'B' level Advanced trophy.
Margaret Russell won the inaugural President's Mug competition.
Wednesday Competition
There were 2 wins for Alan Mayne and one each for
John Leckie, Margaret
Russell, Janice Moir and Lorna Frost. The champion for the whole season
was
Steven Lewis who won the title for the third time.
Team Matches
Bowdon Saints' 9-0 win at home to Southport and their narrow 5-4 defeat
at Pendle was enough to win the NW Federation Advanced League title
and Bowdon Canons, despite a good 7-2 win at Bury, had to settle for
the runners-up spot.
Bowdon Firs beat Southport 5-2 and finished as
runners-up in the Handicap League with St. Mary's in 7th place.
The Short Croquet team lost 13-3 at Bury but finished the season with
two good home victories (Birkdale 10-6 and Chester 11-5) and managed a
respectable 5th position in the league.
The Earls won the Midweek League, finishing on a winning note by
beating Fylde 4-3. The Griffins lost 5-2 at Chester and finished up 4th
in the league.
No glory in the knock-out tournaments this year with Bury,
Cheltenham and Colchester beating the Longman Cup, Mary Rose and
Inter-Club teams respectively.

Other Highlights
Barry Keen played for the English CA against the Swiss CA in Geneva.
Ros Pimlott became a Grade 1 Association Croquet Coach.
The club's AGM and Annual Dinner were held in November.
