SOUTHWICK AUGUST TOURNAMENT, 14th - 17th August

While you might be thinking that our Ground Manager, Alan Mayne, was off on his holidays to somewhere warm and sunny, he had actually gone to play croquet in Sussex at a 4-day tournament. There were 4 class events played over the first 2 days followed by the "2-legged competition" in which each round consisted of a 14-pt. handicap doubles and two singles; the higher handicapped played 14-point handicap singles and the lower 14-point advanced singles. Margaret Russell was also playing in the tournament and was partnering him in the doubles.

Alan Mayne and Margaret Russell came third in the Doubles competition.
Alan Mayne won his advanced class, the B Class event, and can be seen being presented the Scott Cup from the great man himself, John Solomon. Margaret came third in her singles event and got her bronze award for making a break of 10 hoops or more, using bisques; she now plays off a 14 handicap.
All in all, it proved to be a good experience for Margaret, being her first real outside competition!
