CHESHIRE ARE
RUNNERS-UP!!
Cheshire, made up of 6 Bowdon members, lost to
Nottinghamshire 2-1 (Irwin/Winn) on Tuesday afternoon to finish second
in the Inter-County Championships, played at Sussex (Southwick) and
Compton Croquet Clubs
over
the last four days. This is the second year running that Cheshire
have been pipped at the post on the final day.
Going into the final day Cheshire had 7 wins out of 8 and they improved
on that this morning with a 3-0 defeat of Dorset, which included
Bowdon's Alan Linton, but then lost to Notts in the deciding tie. David
Maugham and Brian Storey finished with the very impressive record of
having won 9 out of the 10 games they played.
Matches played Saturday to Monday:
Wins against Sussex 3-0 (all pairings won), Middlesex 2-1
(Maugham/Storey & Irwin/Winn), Essex 2-1 (Maugham/Storey
& Lines/Cooper), Surrey 2-1 (Maugham/Storey & Irwin/Winn),
Glamorgan 2-1 (Maugham/Storey & Irwin/Winn), Yorkshire 3-0 and 2-1
against Lancashire (Maugham/Storey & Lines/Cooper)
and a loss against Somerset 1-2 (Maugham/Storey).
Other Bowdon members taking part were: Keith Aiton
(Nottinghamshire), Ailsa Lines (Lancashire), Alan Linton (Dorset),
David Walters (Glamorgan), Richard Griffiths (Channel Islands) and
Martin Granger Brown (Warwickshire).
